Verdict: a base camp with a pool, not a mountain village

I judge this hotel for one job: sleeping close to the trails of eastern Kananaskis and the Bow Valley. On that job it does well. On some others it does not, and I would rather say that here than in your inbox later.

I do not give stars. A number hides the reason, and the reason is what you need. What follows is built from the resort's own pages as they read on 31 October 2026, the Fall 2025 events package the resort publishes, Alberta Parks trail reports and my own distance checks. Where those sources disagree, I show both figures.

Where it earns its place

  • The junction. Highway 1 and Highway 40 meet beside the property, so the Kananaskis Valley, Canmore and Calgary are all one turn away. Barrier Lake's visitor centre is 7.1 km by my calc.
  • The early start. You are already past the Calgary commute and east of Canmore. For Prairie View or Heart Creek that can mean being on the trail while day-trippers are still on Highway 1.
  • The pool and slide. A heated indoor pool with a waterslide and hot tub, 9 am to 11 pm, is the best thing in the building after a long day, and it is included.
  • Space for vehicles. Free parking, and RVs and trucks may park free after registering at the front desk. Few hotels near the mountains say that out loud.
  • Pets. Allowed in a limited number of rooms for $25 a night per pet, two pets at most.
  • Suites with fireplaces. Junior Suites have an electric fireplace; One Bedroom and Family Suites list a fireplace too.

What to weigh before you send dates

  • Two places to eat. The Ridge closes at 9 pm and Sidelines sits inside the casino area. Beyond that, the on-site Bearspaw Travel Centre has a Tim Hortons and a convenience store, per Travel Alberta. Canmore is 33 km for anything else.
  • A casino in the building. The main floor and Sidelines are non-smoking, with a separate ventilated smoking room. Gaming areas are 18+. If you are travelling with kids, the pool and The Ridge are your spaces.
  • Renovation notice. The resort's banner says renovations are under way in designated areas and are not expected to affect stays. Ask which wing your room is in.
  • Unpublished details. Room sizes, which floors face which way, and accessible-room specifics are not on the room pages. Our desk can ask, but I cannot print them.
  • Deposit. House rules allow a damage deposit of up to $500 by credit card or cash at check-in.
  • No transit. I found no scheduled bus stopping at the resort. Plan on a car.

Who I would send here

Hikers and scramblers working the Bow Valley end of Kananaskis. Skiers heading to Nakiska, 25.7 km away by my calc, who want the drive to the hill to be short and simple. Families who want a slide at the end of the day. Drivers crossing the Rockies on Highway 1 who want to stop before the mountains rather than in them. Groups and teams using the Event Centre and six meeting rooms, covered on meetings and weddings.

Who I would not send: anyone whose evening plan is a walk to dinner and a bookshop, and anyone who wants a spa. The resort publishes a pool, hot tub and gym, and no spa.

How this verdict could change

If the renovation adds dining or a spa, or the hotel publishes room sizes and accessible-room details, I will rewrite the parts above. The date at the bottom of each page tells you when it was last checked. The resort's own description is on its hotel page; compare it with this one.

Last checked against the linked sources: 31 October 2026.

Ask our desk to find you a room

Dates, people, room type: the desk checks the hotel's availability and rate, or a booking partner's, and answers by email.

  • No card asked for. A request is not a booking.
  • Reply by email, usually with the hotel's own rate and any better partner rate.
  • If a stay is confirmed, the hotel or booking partner pays us a commission. You pay us nothing. How that works.

Not the hotel's booking line: the resort's own site is stoneynakodaresort.com.

We answer in English, by email.

Thank you. The desk has your request and will reply by email. Nothing is booked yet.
