Itinerary · summer version with a winter swap

Two days at the gateway, built around check-in at four

Most plans online ignore the boring constraints. This one starts from them: check-in at 4:00 pm, check-out at 11:00 am, The Ridge open 8 am to 9 pm, the pool 9 am to 11 pm.

The times are the resort's own, from its events package, house rules and dining page. The trail figures are Alberta Parks'. The drives are my router checks with no traffic. Everything else is my opinion, and you can ignore it.

Day one: arrive, walk, swim

  1. Noon to 3 pm: Drive in. From downtown Calgary it is 75 km by my calc; the hotel says 45 minutes from Calgary.
  2. 3 pm: Too early to check in, so go straight to Heart Creek, 14.7 km west: 1.3 km one-way through a canyon over seven bridges to a waterfall.
  3. 4:30 pm: Check in. ID ready, deposit up to $500.
  4. 5:30 pm: Pool, hot tub, waterslide if anyone insists.
  5. 7 pm: Dinner at The Ridge, which serves until 9 pm. Buy tomorrow's lunch food on the way in, since there is no cooking in rooms.
  6. 9 pm: Plan the morning. Check the Prairie View trail report and buy the Conservation Pass online for tomorrow.

Day two: Prairie View, then the road

  1. 6:30 am: Leave without breakfast; The Ridge opens at 8. The travel centre's Tim Hortons is the fallback, if open.
  2. 6:45 am: Barrier Dam, 9.2 km away. Prairie View: 6.6 km one-way to the viewpoint, 421 m up.
  3. 10:15 am: Back at the hotel, shower, pack.
  4. 11 am: Check out. Ask at reception the day before if you need the room later; it depends on availability and the normal rate applies.
  5. 11:15 am: Lunch at The Ridge. Breakfast at both The Ridge and Sidelines stops at 11 am, so a post-hike breakfast means being back by half past ten.
  6. Afternoon: Drive on to Canmore or home.

Doing a 13 km round trip before an 11:00 checkout is tight. If you would rather not rush, check out first, leave the car at Barrier Dam and hike after. Or stay a second night.

The 48-hour version

Add a full day between the two above: Kananaskis Village for Troll Falls and the Village Loop in the morning, Rawson Lake at Upper Kananaskis Lake in the afternoon, 3.9 km and 320 m one-way. Back for the pool. Or switch direction and take Canmore and Grassi Lakes for the day.

Winter swap

From December, swap Prairie View for something shorter and check the icy-trail warnings: Alberta Parks flags Heart Creek and Troll Falls in the cold months. Nakiska is 25.7 km from the hotel by my calc. Ask for a Junior Suite with its electric fireplace, and keep the hot tub in the plan.

What to tell the desk

Your dates, the number of people, the room type, and whether you need an early or late time. Write 'Prairie View on day two' in the notes if you want the desk to ask about luggage storage after checkout; the house rules say storage is offered when there is space, at your own risk.

Ask our desk to find you a room

Dates, people, room type: the desk checks the hotel's availability and rate, or a booking partner's, and answers by email.

  • No card asked for. A request is not a booking.
  • Reply by email, usually with the hotel's own rate and any better partner rate.
  • If a stay is confirmed, the hotel or booking partner pays us a commission. You pay us nothing. How that works.

Not the hotel's booking line: the resort's own site is stoneynakodaresort.com.

We answer in English, by email.

Thank you. The desk has your request and will reply by email. Nothing is booked yet.
