Seasons at the gateway: what opens, what closes, and when

Kananaskis runs on a calendar of closures that most visitors meet only when they hit the gate. These are the dates that change a trip from this hotel.

Every date on this page comes from Alberta Parks, Alberta.ca or the resort's own event pages, checked on 31 October 2026. Wildlife closures can be added at short notice and are not listed here; the trail reports on Alberta Parks are the live source.

Many Springs Interpretive has been closed since 14 October 2026 for trail damage, with no reopening date.

Late autumn: now

As I write, it is the end of October. The resort's Fall Getaway package runs from 1 October to 30 November and lists a $50 dining credit at The Ridge or Sidelines, a $30 gas card and a 1 pm late checkout; the page shows no rate and no year, so ask the desk to confirm it on your dates. Highway 40 south stays open until 30 November. Expect ice on shaded trails.

Winter: December to March

The southern road shuts on 1 December. Alberta Parks warns that Heart Creek, Troll Falls and the Grassi Lakes trails may be icy any time in the colder months, even when other trails are not, and recommends footwear with microspikes and poles. Nakiska is 25.7 km from the hotel. In the resort's events package, snowshoeing and hiking are listed among the outings its events coordinator can arrange for groups.

Spring: April to June

Mud season. Galatea, Chester Lake and part of Stoney Trail close to dry out, and Highway 40 south stays shut until 14 June. The lower trails close to the hotel, such as Barrier Lake Interpretive and Prairie View, are where I would look first; check the report before you go.

Summer: mid-June to September

Everything opens. Rafting and helicopter trips from the resort are summer operations, per Travel Alberta. Long days make the after-hike swim possible: the pool is open until 11 pm. Buy the Conservation Pass before you arrive; it costs $15 a day per personal vehicle and can be bought online until 11:59 pm on the first day of your visit.

Dated events at the resort

The resort lists the Kananaskis Rally on 8 November 2026, Muay Thai World Cup 15 on 12 December 2026 and a Beatles tribute concert with a Christmas buffet on 19 December 2026. Details on events and shows.

Ask our desk to find you a room

Dates, people, room type: the desk checks the hotel's availability and rate, or a booking partner's, and answers by email.

  • No card asked for. A request is not a booking.
  • Reply by email, usually with the hotel's own rate and any better partner rate.
  • If a stay is confirmed, the hotel or booking partner pays us a commission. You pay us nothing. How that works.

Not the hotel's booking line: the resort's own site is stoneynakodaresort.com.

We answer in English, by email.

Thank you. The desk has your request and will reply by email. Nothing is booked yet.
