Prairie View before checkout: the arithmetic

It is the closest real climb to the hotel and it starts ten minutes away. So can you do it on your last morning and still check out at eleven?

The fixed numbers first. Alberta Parks lists Prairie View at 6.6 km one-way to the viewpoint with 421 m of gain. That is 13.2 km there and back before you add the lookout or Jewell Pass. Barrier Dam is 9.2 km from the hotel by my calc, about ten minutes each way. Check-out is 11:00 am under the house rules.

The sum

  1. Walking time: I am not going to invent a pace for you. Take your own usual time for 13 km with 421 m of climbing on a forestry road, and add your usual stops.
  2. Driving: About 20 minutes for the round trip to Barrier Dam, plus parking.
  3. Back at the room: Half an hour to shower and pack is realistic for most people.
  4. Result: Subtract all of it from 11:00. If the start time that comes out is before first light, the plan does not fit.

What I would do instead

  • Hike it on arrival day. Check-in is not until 4:00 pm, so arrive in the morning and walk first.
  • Check out first, then hike. You lose the shower, but you lose the clock too.
  • Ask for a later checkout. The house rules allow it if the room is free, at the normal rate. The Fall Getaway package listed on the resort's site includes a 1 pm checkout between 1 October and 30 November.
  • Pick a shorter climb. Barrier Lake Interpretive is 2.5 km one-way from the lower lot and climbs 100 m to a ridge over both ends of the lake.

Before you go

Buy the Conservation Pass, check the Prairie View trail report for closures, and remember the group size limit of 15. The trail list with everything nearby is on trails near the hotel.

Ask our desk to find you a room

Dates, people, room type: the desk checks the hotel's availability and rate, or a booking partner's, and answers by email.

  • No card asked for. A request is not a booking.
  • Reply by email, usually with the hotel's own rate and any better partner rate.
  • If a stay is confirmed, the hotel or booking partner pays us a commission. You pay us nothing. How that works.

Not the hotel's booking line: the resort's own site is stoneynakodaresort.com.

We answer in English, by email.

Thank you. The desk has your request and will reply by email. Nothing is booked yet.
